The Duke is a M35A2 Cargo/Troop Carrier made by Kaiser-Jeep Corporation in Southbend Indiana. In fact every Kaiser-Jeep truck what would later become the Am General Corporation after the Renault bought out the Corporation Kaiser-Jeep forcing the creation of the AmGeneral for legal purposes to fullfil military contracts like the construction of the M35 trucks and other trucks. This truck has an air-engaged front axle for six wheel drive operation. It is also powered by a LDT-465-1D Turbo Multifuel Engine. This engine is really a diesel engine with a fuel compensator so it can more effectively run fuels with various specifc BTU rates. The engine develops a 130hp gross at 2600rpm with only the fan and water pump running. With alternator and air-compressor it is more like 120hp at 2600rpm. It makes 305ft-lbs of torque at 1500rpm gross. By any standard the truck is not overly powerful in a raw power sense. In fact it is underpowered. The key to the trucks power is mechanical advantage. The differentials in all three axles is 6.72:1 and this amplified by the two speed transfer case. The low range is 1.98:1 and the high range is 1.01 : 1. This gear set combined with the Spicer 3053A OD fifth gear gearbox gives the truck a top speed of 28mph in low in fifth gear and 56mph in the same gear in high range.
